African - American Persons Born Prior to Emancipation

Information Gathered from Cemetery Records and Death Records

Submitted by Kathey Hunt and Linda Harwell
Donated by: Kathey Hunt, Co-Coordinator of

Kaufman Co., Texas TXGenWeb Project

*UN - denotes Grave is Unmarked by any transcribed stone - there may be rocks or other items marking grave

Birth dates in Parenthesis (_) denotes an estimated age by years on death records Information in Parenthesis (_) under the column "Inscriptions,", etc. denotes that it was taken from the Death record

KCC - Kaufman County Clerk's office. All Bk & Pg info comes from Kaufman County Death Records.

***The Pyle's Prairie Cemetery is a known Caucasian burial ground, however  Pyle family members and others who lived in that community did own slaves, and many slave owners considered their servants to be family members.  It was not unheard of to bury persons of color in family cemeteries.  It is also very possible that an unknown graveyard of persons of color lies adjacent to the marked cemetery.

*** The Jiba Cemetery ( Wilson 's Chapel) is a known Caucasian burial ground, however

those who lived in that community did own slaves, and many slave owners considered their servants to be family members.  It was not unheard of to bury persons of color in family cemeteries.  It is also very possible that an unknown graveyard of persons of color lies adjacent to the marked cemetery.

NOTE: This theory can be proven with the interment of T J Johnson, who was the son of slave , which was primarily a burial site of Caucasian persons.

NOTE concerning " EGYPT ":

Those burials marked "Buried Egypt" are probably interred at Ayers Chapel or at Flat Rock, however, some may be interred in an area between the Caro Cemetery and the Fox Cemetery , which was first known as the Slave Graveyard of the Fox & Spikes families.

 NOTE concerning "ELMO"

Those burials marked "buried Elmo" are probably interred at Fairview / Trinity Cemetery, however, some may be at Shady Grove, which was also known as Cobb Colored at one time, and as Frog Graveyard.

 NOTE concerning "BACHELOR"

Those burials marked "buried Bachelor" are most probably interred at what is now Mt. Hebron .

NOTE concerning "died at Terrell". Burial of those persons were probably made at Old Oakwood Cemetery , however, it is known that some persons buried their slaves at what is now called the Terrell Pioneer cemetery.

This page could not have been possible without the diligent research of Linda Harwell.
