John Waley and Elema McClure

 

John Waley McClure was born about 1808 in Kentucky and was listed in the 1880 census as living in Newport with his wife, Elema, who was born 1832 in Kentucky. Also living with them was a granddaughter, Mary Ann Collins, born 1868 in Kentucky.

During the Civil War, John enlisted from Camp Nelson in the US Colored Troops 6th Kentucky Calvary in 1862 and served 2 years and 11 months. He was discharged in 1865. By the time of the 1890 Veterans census in Newport, he was suffering from rupture and sunstroke, and was paralyzed about helpless.

John died 26 May 1894* in Newport of old age. He was listed as being 86 years old when he died and was buried 29 May in Evergreen Cemetery.
