After the mayor and board of commissioners Tuesday had given their hand of approval, leaders of the negro race in Newport began to work to establish a day nursery for negro children in the western section of the city.

Anna May and Virginia (Lavina) Ellis teachers in the Newport colored school, Monday called on Mayor Livingston to discuss the idea. They explained that no funds were needed from the city. Mayor Livingston said he would do all within his power to assist in establishing such a home.
