Alexandria Churches

 

Alexandria Church of Christ-36 Popular Ridge Road

Alexandria United Methodist Church-361 West Main Street.  The first Methodist Episcopal Congregation was between 1820-1825.  A log cabin on the William Reily farm was used for meetings.

First Baptist Church of Alexandria-104 Washington Street.  On April 17, 1820, a number of people obtained permission from the Baptist Church at Four Mile, met at the house of William DeCoursey to form a Baptist Church.  The first minister was Raymond Absalem Graves.  For a while members worshipped in private homes.  Later a one-story brick building was constructed as its first church.  This church building which stands next to the Courthouse back from the main street, was in use for many years, but was never finished.  It was finally abandoned and the church worship was held in the Courthouse.  In 1864 arrangements were made for the members to use the Methodist Episcopal Church South on Main Street.  The present church in the heart of town on Washington Street was built in 1870.

Main Street Baptist Church-306 West Main Street

Saint Johns Evangelical Protestant Church-on Pooles Road.  In 1875 several German Christian families built this church.  It opened in 1876 and behind the church auditorium was a room which was used for the Poole's Creek Public School.  In 1908 services were altered to have German one Sunday and English the next.

Saint Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church-5 South Jefferson. The first church was built in 1860 with a membership of 30 families. In 1889 the members asked that a new church be built.  On October 25, 1891 a new church was dedicated by the Most Rev Bishop Brossart.  He was assisted by Rev Kollop, Rev Hund, Rev Keller, Rev Pior Haas and Rev Hisson. In 1932 a new lighting system was installed. In 1960 Saint Mary's Boy Scouts completed the outdoor shrine of the Blessed Mother.  A new church was built and dedicated in 1983.  The old building was torn and burned down.

Saint Paul's Church of the United Church of Christ-Main and Jefferson was founded in 1850.  The log structure was located 500 feet from Main Street and 500 feet from Jefferson.  In 1901 the congregation moved into a new building.  The German language was used exclusively in the church until 1909.  There was a fire in 1923.  It was incorporated in 1927.  In 1931 they were granted membership in Evangelical Synod of North America.  In 1934 the name was changed to St. Paul's Evangelical and Reformed Church.  In 1960 the church joined the United Church of Christ.
