Death came early Saturday to A M Caldwell, former Campbell Circuit Court judge, one hour after he was admitted to Speers Hospital in Dayton. A power in Republican politics in Campbell County for more than three decades, Judge Caldwell began his career in public life when he was elected city attorney of Bellevue in 1901. Successively he was county attorney and county judge before being elected to the circuit court bench.

He served in that capacity 18 years before being defeated in 1939 by the late Roger L Neff Jr. Judge Neff, who died six months later was succeeded by the present judge Ray L Murphy. Judge Caldwell had been in failing health six months, members of his family said. He suffered a slight stroke a week ago, but was improved Friday. During the nigh he suffered another stroke and was taken to the hospital Saturday morning.

He was a member of Henry Barnes Lodge of Masons, the Shrine and Scottish Rite; was active in the Newport Lodge of Elks and held directorships in the Campbell County Bank, Bellevue, and the Citizens Building & Loan Association Dayton. He leaves a daughter, Mrs. Bertha H Gabriel, wife of Lewis Gabriel, director of census and statistics for the Kenton County Board of Education; a sister Mrs. Grover Thacker, Huntington, W Va. three brothers, Granville, Robert and Conrad all of LeSage W Va. his birthplace; one grandson, Wallace Gabriel, a graduate of Annapolis and one granddaughter, Bertha Sue Gabriel.

Services will be held at 2 pm Tuesday at the Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in Highland cemetery, Ft Mitchell.
