DEATH-L Archie Howley, 24, C&O Railroad switchman and important witness in the murder case of Detective Leslie D Johnson, was himself the victim of murder in the yards at Silver Grove at 10:30 Friday night. Swinging onto a gondola car as it rushed down the west side of the hump, Howley climbed to the top to adjust the break.
Here he encountered three men. One struck at him with a knife. Howley stepped back to avoid the knife and fell beneath the car wheels. His right leg was cut off at the angle, the left leg just below the knee, both shoulder blades broken and his skull fractured. When railroad employees found Howley and rushed him to Speers Hospital, the front of his coat was cut.
The victim was married 18 months ago to Hilda Steffen, daughter of James Steffen, Covington cement contractor. They resided at the Wallingford Flats at Twentieth and Pearl sts. Covington. The widow is prostrated.
