The corner stone for the St John Church on Johns Hill, three miles back of Newport, will be laid tomorrow. One of the Newport ferry boats will be called into requisition to transport those who desire to go up Licking river. The ceremony connected with the laying of the Cornerstone for the New Roman Catholic Church of John The Baptist, will take place on SUNDAY 25th inst. at 3 PM by the Right Rev Bishop Branags, D D Saute St Mary, upper Michigan. The steamer Champion will leave the foot of Walnut street at 1 1/2 o'clock, calling at foot of Second street, Covington and Newport for parties going. Fare, 10 cents each way.

Yesterday morning some interesting exercises took place at the Methodist Episcopal Sunday School. Miss James, accompanied by Miss Alice Smalley, advanced near the pulpit and in a neat speech presented himself on behalf of the school, with a certificate of life membership in the Missionary Society. Two other scholars advanced on behalf of the infant class and presented Miss Sarah Chippendale with a like gift. The officers for the past year have been W H Waters, Superintendent: A M Bodley, Assistant: I Baughman, Treasurer and Secretary; S Schell and James Jackson, Librarians; and Miss Annie Sebastian, Melodeonist.

Under the head of Newport Ky. News, The Cincinnati Gazette of yesterday publishes this: On Saturday morning last, our citizens were startled by the announcement the Catholic priest who presided over the St Stephen Church at the head of Monmouth street, had left the previous night for parts unknown. The cause of his departure was soon discovered. It appears that an improper and criminal intimacy had long subsisted between himself and a female member of his congregation and which had continued unsuspected until concealment was no longer possible, when he absconded, leaving his victim to bear the taunts of the world. The female had moved in respectable circles and aside from the present affair, her conduct had been exemplary.

On Sunday last, $1700 were subscribed by the congregation of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Taylor street, for the improvement of that edifice, and since then the pastor, Rev Mrs. Cunningham, has succeeded in swelling the amount to $1850. The church will undergo complete alteration and repair and will be refitted throughout, improvements much needed.

The Methodist Church on Taylor street has been handsomely remodeled and improved. The alterations to the main part of the edifice are not yet complete, but the Sunday School room which has been much enlarged and otherwise improved, will be re-opened for religious services Sunday next, at 9 am when the Sabbath school will assemble.

The Pastor will preach at 11 am in the forenoon and half past seven in the evening.

Despite the rain of yesterday morning, the Methodist Episcopal Church was pretty well filled to hear the dedication sermon by Rev E W Schon, of Nashville Tenn. At the conclusion of the services a collection amounting to $130 was raised, to relieve the church from debt. At half past three in the afternoon, Dr. J S McFerrin preached and at night, Lorenzo Dow Houston delivered as eloquent sermon.

The silver cup and one of the plated vessels, stolen from the Roman Catholic Church a few nights ago, were found in the Pearl street station house, Cincinnati, night before last. How they got there is a mystery.

The meeting at Asbury Chapel, five and one half miles back of Newport on the Fourth was a brilliant affair. The exercises opened with prayer after which Hon. John F Fisk was introduced. Among those present were Colonel M M Benton of Covington, and Colonel R F Baker the unswerving Union Senator from Campbell and Pendleton.

The Master Commissioner yesterday sold the Church of the Immaculate Conception situated on Madison street, to the highest bidder. It is a part of the old Gilfoyle estate. The property was bid in by Building Association No 4, which holds a claim against the estate of $5000.

Gathered in a little room in the German Protestant Church on Seventh Street, Newport, Wednesday night, the 13 remaining members of the congregation assembled to talk over the condition of the church. It had been impossible for the little flock to keep a pastor and it was decided to sell their church and turn the proceeds over to the First Baptist Church and also to join the same.
