Carrie, Daisy and Walter Winslow

Cincinnati Post, Monday, 26 January 1885, page 4

Mrs. (Carrie) Winslow, living in a neat house at Taylor and York st. Newport, strangled to death with a piece of twine Walter, her 7 year old son, cut her 10 year old daughter Daisy's throat and then committed suicide by cutting her own throat with the same razor. Mrs. Winslow has been of unsound mind for some time, and has not lived with her husband, who is in Buffalo NY for six years. She resided with her mother, Mrs. (Margaret) Davis, and her two brothers, Charles and Will.

Sunday the entire family went to church, leaving the two children, Mrs. Winslow and two servants. Some time after the folks left, the children went to their mother's room. She strangled Walter and cut Daisy but Daisy pretended to be dead until her mother cut her own throat. Mrs. Winslow has been suffering mentally for some time and has been at the College Hill Sanitarium. While there it is said she threatened suicide. The murdered boy was a blonde bright and intelligent child. The girl is a beautiful child, with dark eyes and she fully appreciates the horrible situation and seems to be glad her life was not taken also.

Lena Wells, the servant, testified: "I heard Daisy screaming and ran upstairs; the door was locked, but I heard conversation. I knew something was wrong and called Mr. Coyne and notified the police. I heard she tried to drown the children Saturday in the cistern and when I asked her about it, she replied she only told Walter if he was not a good boy, she would put him in the cistern."

A jury returned a verdict of murder and suicide by Mrs. Winslow while laboring under a fit of insanity.
