Coxswain Third Class Donald E Birkett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Birkett, of 47 Parkview avenue, South Newport, is a veteran of the U. S. Navy despite his 18 years of age.
He is now home on a furlough after being at sea for more than a year. He took part in several sea engagements in the Pacific. He enlisted in the Navy July 25, 1943. He wears four bronze stars and two campaign bars. His father is a mail carrier and well known musician.
