Kentucky Post, Tuesday, 16 June 1903, page 5

Edward Schultz, 14, son of Michael Schultz, of 1128 Orchard Street, Newport, was drowned in the Licking River, near the Old ’76 Distillery late Monday. Schultz with four other boys, rowed out to the middle of the stream and jumped into the water. The boat turned over and all started to swim for the Campbell County shore. John Nichols, of 1031 Central Avenue, Newport and Schultz called for help and both disappeared below the surface. John Aiken, another member of the party, turned his attention to Nichols and succeeded in getting him to shore but Schultz never appeared.

A party went to work with grappling hoods and at a late hour last night the body was recovered. The body was removed Tuesday from Betz undertaking establishment to his home, from where the funeral will take place Thursday. Services will be held at St Stephen Church and burial will take place at St Stephen Cemetery.
