Elmer H Holyoke

Cincinnati Enquirer, Monday, 15 Nov 1909, page 9

At Speers Hospital last night it was said that Elmer Holyoke, Newport, the peddler who was stabbed during a quarrel of a game of craps at Eighth and Lowell street Saturday, was fatally wounded and that his death was liable to occur at any time.  Holyoke walked so far in quest of a physician that the wounds in his stomach were greatly aggravated.

Detective Frank Morton visited the hospital yesterday and secured an ante mortem statement from Holyoke.  The latter stated that after the quarrel started, he walked out of the saloon and a man named Coughlin followed him. Outside a fight started and Holyoke claims that Coughlin was the man who wielded the knife.  The police were yesterday given a description of the man charge with the cutting and ordered to bring him n.

Officers encountered Coughlin last night in his boarding house and fired several shots at him but he escaped.

Elmer H Holyoke, 39, peddler of 438 W Sixth av. Newport, was fighting Monday for his life at Speers Hospital, Dayton. Holyoke Saturday night was attacked by an unidentified man on the Alexandria pike, near 18th st. Clifton. Attaches of the hospital held little hope for his recovery. Since he was found on the pike he has not regained consciousness.

Campbell co. authorities Monday were searching for the wearer of a gray soft hat, found near Holyoke believing the owner would throw some light on the mysterious attack.  If Holyoke dies, authorities will never be able to apprehend the assailant as descriptions by them are of little value. Two Cincinnatians, Stanley A Ferger, and Frank Cross Jr. told James Fuller, Newport detective, that while are their way to Cincinnati they saw two men engaged in a fight near the place where Holyoke was found.

The two men said they drove a short distance from the scene and watched the battle. One of them fell and the other fled. Authorities were certain robbery was not the motive for in Holyoke's pockets were $81.20, his collections for the day. Persons living near the scene were unable to throw any light on the mystery, deputies of the office of Joseph Dietz, sheriff said Monday.

A short distance from where Holyoke was lying Detective Fuller found his horses and wagon.
