DIED IN NEWPORT


Dr. F J Locke, 74, died at his late home, 725 Overton Street, Newport, Friday morning at 9 o'clock. He had been ill since Sunday and senile debility was the cause of death. He was one of the oldest practicing physicians in Campbell County and was prominent, being a Mason and GAR. He was born in London, England, and came to Newport in 1847. He was Lieutenant Colonel of the Thirty-third Ohio Volunteers during the Civil War and was Dean at the Eclectic College, Cincinnati, for a number of years.

A family of grown children survive him, among them being Dr. F A Locke of Newport and W O Locke, of Norwood O. Dave Locke and John B Locke are brothers.

This is the third of the oldest physicians of Newport that has passed away in a year. The first was Dr. J A Jeancon and then Dr. F A Davis.

REMAINS OF DR LOCKE

The funeral of the late Dr. F J Locke took place Sunday afternoon from the home, 725 Overton Street. It was one of the largest ever held in Newport and was in charge of the Masonic Fraternity. The William Nelson and Col. J W Abert Post, GAR also attended. Rev J P Whitehead, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church and Rev Mr. Smith, acting pastor of Grace M E Church, conducted the services. The burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.

The active pallbearers were T P Carothers, Dr. John Phythian, George Bishop and Fred Lampe Sr. of the Masons and Dr. George Brown and Dr. Martin of Cincinnati. The honorary pallbearers from the medical fraternity of Newport were Dr. R H Thorton, Dr. H Gunckel and Dr. August Helmbold and Dr. F A Clark.
