Lieut. George Lee Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ross, N Ft Thomas Avenue, Ft Thomas, has arrived safely in Great Britain, according to a cablegram received by his parents. Lieut. Ross received his wings at Barkdale Field, Shreveport La. after which he was ordered to Long Beach in the Ferry Command. Lieut. Ross was the first Ft Thomas man to receive this award.

Flying a P-38 fighter, Lieut. George L Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ross, 331 Ft Thomas road, Ft Thomas, has been credited with shooting down an Italian Macchi 200 in a recent raid over Sardinia, it was revealed Thursday. Lieut. Ross, who enlisted in the Army Air Forces in January 1941 and was commissioned the following August, was decorated last November along with his squadron. He passed three months with the Ferry Command before going overseas.

He is a graduate of Highlands High School, Ft Thomas and Transylvania University, Lexington Ky.

First Lieut. George L Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ross, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for participation in one trans-Atlantic flight and 40 sorties. Recent dispatches told of him downing an enemy plane of an Italian type in North Africa action. He enlisted in January 1941 and was commissioned in August. The 26 year old officer was in the Ferry Command three months before being sent overseas for combat duty.

The air over the Mediterranean was turned into a living hell for the Axis over the weekend and two northern Kentuckians were there to represent the Blue Grass state. The Kentucky flyers who took part in the sky melee are Lieut. George L Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ross, Ft Thomas and John A Williams, of Eden avenue, Bellevue, husband of Mrs. Juanita Trunnell Williams, who is now living with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Trunnel, 176 Eden avenue, Bellevue.

Lieut. Ross, who shot down a Messerschmitt, said; "We were flying at 200 feet when we sighted the convoy of transports. Fifteen fighters, most of them Machi 200s were escorting them. I attacked one of the fighters and fired a three second burst of machine gun and cannon into him. He fluttered and crashed into the sea."

Mr. and Mrs Lee Ross, Ft Thomas, received a telephone call Sunday from their son, Capt. George L Ross, Army Air Forces, telling them he had arrived in Miami Fla. after serving a year overseas. He said he expects to be at home on leave in the near future.

A graduate of Highland High School and Transylvania University, Lexington, Capt. Ross enlisted in the Air Corps in January 1941. He has won the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross.

Capt. George L Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ross, Ft Thomas, was heard on a west coast program Wednesday night with Bing Crosby. The program which was not carried locally was a dramatization of Capt. Ross recent flying experiences over North Africa. Although only 26, he wears the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and eight Oak Leaf Clusters, all awarded for meritorious service.

Capt. Ross has been credited with 204 combat hours and has gone on 62 missions, most of which entailed escorting Flying Fortresses on high altitude raids. Now stationed in California, from where the program originated, he is awaiting his next assignment.

After establishing a distinguished military record, Capt. George L Ross, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lee Ross, Ft Thomas, is visiting his parents during a brief leave. Member of the Army Air Forces, Capt. Ross has received 10 decorations for meritorious service and bravery, including the Distinguished Air Medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

He was graduated recently from the General Staff School, Ft Leavenworth Kan. and is to attend the Army Air Forces Staff School, Washington DC.

Ft Thomas Living, 1944

Captain George L Ross of the Army Air Forces, who has been decorated 10 times for meritorious service and bravery in battle, having received the Distinguished Flying Cross, is passing a brief leave with his parents. Captain Ross, who was graduated recently from the General Staff School, Ft Leavenworth, Kan. is now to attend the Army Air Forces Staff School, Washington DC.

Before enlisting in November 1940, Captain Ross was associated with the Cincinnati Retail Credit Association. Commenting on Captain Ross return home, Professor James B McKenna of the faculty of Highlands High School and Director of the Hiland Band, observed that Captain Ross and the late Lieut. Alan Yelton wre his first two French Horn players when the band was organized in 1929.
