Gubsers Mill History

The hub of southernmost Campbell County, Gubser's Mill is built around the old mill and part of a larger area also known as Twelve Mile. In the area is the Old Gubser's flour and sawmill, St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, the Hickory Grove Picnic Grounds and the cross roads community of Kohler.

Gubser's Mill was named for John Andreas Gubser, a native of St. Gallens, Switzerland, who operated the mill in the mid 1800s.  It was located at what is California Cross Roads, Gubser Road and Wesley Chapel Road.  Wesley Chapel is a small community along the Campbell-Pendleton county line.

An 1885 story said Guber's Mill also had a blacksmith and wagon shop, a shoe shop, a store, a post office and a law office staffed by John H Nelson Jr.  The 1880 census listed 41 residents.

The community hub, St. Peter and Paul Church sits on a hilltop overlooking the intersection of California Cross Roads and Shaw-Goetz Road.  The first log church was built there in 1853; a school was built four years later.

The cornerstone for a new church was laid on August 17, 1898 and dedicated in August of 1899.  A slippage problem forced abandonment of the church building in 1927.  The church in use now was opened December 8, 1928.
