TRAGEDY-S Sgt. Harry Miller, 19 year old Dayton overseas veteran, escaped injury Wednesday in a Chicago hotel fire, which claimed the life of his buddy. The two Kentuckians were among a group of five soldiers who had left nearby Ft Sheridan late Monday to enjoy a three day pass prior to discharge.

T Sgt. Julian F Matlock, 20, Richmond, died in his flaming room at the Sheffield Manor Hotel as the blaze swept the top floor of the four story building. the Dayton soldier is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Miller, 926 Maple avenue, Dayton, who said Thursday that they as yet had received no word from him. Sgt. Miller has been in service for 22 months, 18 of which were spent in the Pacific with the infantry. His parents said this was the second large fire he had experience in the service. He had escaped last November when fire swept the barracks in which he was sleeping on the island of Shikoku, Japan.

Mrs. Miller was given first definite word of her sons escape by the Kentucky Post. When told he was not injured and that Army officers said he might expect a discharge within a week, she replied, "Oh I'm so glad. It's really a great relief."
