Herman Philip Joering was born 10 April 1844 in Hanover, Germany, the son of Herman and Elizabeth Joering, and immigrated to the United States before 1860, where he is listed in the 1860 census in Jamestown (now Dayton) Ky. working as a tailor. This was a trade he worked his whole life and eventually owned his own business in Dayton. He enlisted in the Naval  Rendezvous in 15 August 1864 in Cincinnati. According to the 1890 Veterans census, he served as a seaman on the Flag Ship Black Hawk. The Black Hawk, a side wheeler river steamer, was built in New Albany Indiana and commissioned 6 Dec 1862 for the US Navy. Herman patrolled in the Mississippi River and its tributaries until it accidentally burned and sank, three miles about Cairo, Illinois, 22 Apr 1865. Herman mustered out shortly after that on 30 May 1865.

 Elizabeth Mary Worth was born 1 Mar 1847 in New York, the daughter of Sylvester Worth and Katharina Ziegler, both of whom were born in Germany. By 1860 Elisabeth and her family were living in Cincinnati. Herman married Elizabeth Mary Worth 21 April 1866 in Dayton Ky. and they spent the rest of their lives in Dayton.

Herman Joering, 73, city assessor of Dayton, died at his home, 1105 Third av. Dayton, Tuesday. Joering was at one time mayor of Dayton. He has severed in Council several times. His wife is dead. Several grown children survive him. The funeral will be held Thursday morning from St Bernard Church. Burial will be in St Francis Cemetery.
