There have been no police in the park at night and Hugo Schaefer has been gardener and chief all round man during the day. His salary has been $30 a month and it is now the purpose to invest him with police power to make arrests to wrong doers in the park.

PIONEER-Hugo Shafer (sic) 73, one of Newport's pioneers, died at his home, 325 Central av. Tuesday. Shafer for many years was custodian of the Newport City Park. He was prominently identified with the affairs of William Nelson Post GAR. The funeral will be held Thursday.

SERVICES-Services for Hugo Shafer, for years superintendent of the Newport City Park and prominently identified with William Nelson Post GAR, who died Tuesday will be held Thursday afternoon at the residence, 325 Central av. The body will be buried in Evergreen Cemetery.

Hugo Michael Schaefer was born 1 Apr 1832 in Zurich, Switzerland. He immigrated to the United States in 1865 and joined the Army near the end of the Civil War, serving as a Sergeant in the 18th Infantry Co E. While stationed at the Fort Thomas Barracks, he met and married Fredrika Renz in 1873. He was discharged 4 May 1882 and made in home in Newport. On June 10, 1897 he applied and was granted a pension. The pension shows Heinrich as an alias name.
