Born on Aug. 26, 1893, Sister Irminia Saelinger was a professor for Thomas More College for 52 years; actually teaching when the institution was called Villa Madonna.  While at Thomas More, she received the first professor emeritus, and also an honorary doctorate degree. Between 1936 and 1953, she spent her summers in Washington, D.C., teaching in the education department at the Catholic University of America.  In 1971 she received the “Outstanding Educator of America” award because of her positive and direct influence on education.

She wrote several journal articles and books on education, and while at Thomas More, she co-authored “Capitol Speller,” a book used by parochial schools in the 1930s.  Before leaving Thomas More in 1973, she wrote the history of the college in the book “Retrospect and Vista.”  Sister Saelinger was a teacher of teachers, education and showing an example for those choosing education as a career.

She died march 12, 1987 at the age of 94, but her dedication to education lives on, through Thomas More College and the many students she taught.
