NEWPORT MURDER-Isaac Harris, 35, of 529 W Sixth st. Newport, convicted of manslaughter late Wednesday by a jury in Campbell Circuit Court and sentenced to 21 years in the state penitentiary, was held Thursday in jail pending removal to the state prison. Harris was indicted for the murder of Alvin Spencer, 55, of Corinth Ky. The latter was stabbed fatally June 16 at Second and Columbia.
Leo Livingston, night police chief and Joseph Mahoney and John Phistner, detectives, who arrested the accused, testified as to the confessions made by Harris, the latter's brother, Vincent Harris and his son, Richard, 8, in which they charged Isaac stabbed the victim. Lawrence J Diskn, commonwealth attorney conducting the prosecution, placed Vincent Harris and his son on the stand as state witnesses and they related how the accused and Spencer argued and how Harris stabbed Spencer apparently without provocation.
Harris pleaded self-defense. He said he stabbed Spencer after the latter drew his hand from his pocket. He said he believed Spencer was drawing a weapon. Police said no weapons were found on Spencer.
