Jacob and Caroline Kirschner

 

Jacob P Kirschner was born in 11 January 1839 in Berg, Kandel, Bavaria, Germany, the son of Jacob Kirschner and Margaret Scherer.  The family immigrated to the United States in 1845 and settled in Campbell County.  Jacob joined the 23rd Kentucky Regiment in the Union army in 1862 during the Civil War.  The unit was organized 1 Jan 1862.  Jacob and his unit fought in the following battles:

5 Aug 1862 at Murfreesboro TN; 31 Dec 1862 at Stones River TN; 2 Jan 1863 at Murfreesboro TN: 14 Sep 1863 at Ringgold GA; 19-20 Sep 1863 at Chickamauga GA; 3 Oct 1863; 27 Oct 1863 at Browns Ferry TN; 24-25 Nov 1863 at Missionary Ridge TN; 9 May 1864 at Rocky Face Ridge GA; 14-15 May 1864 at Resaca GA; 26 May 1864 at Allatoona GA; 27 May 1864 at New Hope Church GA; 18 June 1864; 6 July 1864 at Chattahoochee River GA; 27 July and 3 Aug 1864 at Atlanta GA; 30 Nov 1864.

This regiment was organized at Camp King near Covington. The regiment was in camp until February 1862 when it went to Lexington, thence beyond Lebanon to Rolling Fork, then it marched to Bardstown and Louisville where it went on board the steamer Diana and was transported to Nashville, where they remained until spring.

In August it was in a severe fight at Round Mountain and lost 4 men.  The regiment then marched with Buell's army to Kentucky, being in Grose's brigade Smith's division Crittenden's corns. Even though they were at the Battle of Perryville, the regiment did not become engaged though it was with the army. After Bragg's retirement from Kentucky, Jacob and his unit marched back to Nashville, where he remained until the Battle of Murfreesboro. Jacob mustered out 27 Dec 1865 as a Captain and returned to Newport.

According to the 1890 veterans census, Jacob states that he was in the Andersonville Prison for one year and seven months.

Jacob married Caroline Speth, on 11 Nov 1873 in Dayton Ky. Caroline Speth was born 24 Jan 1848 and died 15 May 1909 in Dayton and was buried in the St Francis of Assisi Catholic Cemetery. Jacob died 22 Sep 1912 in Dayton and was buried in the St Francis of Assisi Cemetery.
