An investigation was instituted Wednesday by George Ebert, Newport Jailer and police authorities of what is believed to have been a well planned wholesale delivery from Newport jai. The jail delivery was frustrated late Tuesday when Ebert discovered an iron bar concealed under the bunk of William Powers, Newport, who is serving a six months sentence on a jail breaking charge.

The $25,311.75 paid George Ebert as Newport Jailer, Campbell County's highest paid official will be investigated by Fred L McLane, mayor. The probe will result in a decreased of the fee paid Ebert by the city for the feeding of prisoners. Ebert received 50 cents a day from the city for the feeding of a prisoner, whether the inmate is confined by the city, county or the federal government. The jailer's profit on a prisoner daily is estimated at 40 cents as the food served can be prepared for 20 cents. A large number of prisoners receive their food from outside sources.

Prisoners confined in Newport jail had every reason in the world to be jealous of those inmates in the county jail at Alexandria. While the inmates at Alexandria were feasting Christmas on turkey and all the trimmings provided by Herman Kemper, county jailer, those in the city were eating roast pork. George Ebert, Newport Jailer, explained because of the large number of prisoners he was unable to feed them turnkey, the Dutch turkey being more reasonable.
