Jailer John Bitzer, of Newport, returned from a trip to California O. at noon Wednesday. He was accompanied by a man named Hoffman from Madison Ind. The Jailer was given a tip that "Shike" Collis McKee, one of the prisoners who escaped from the Newport Jail some time ago during the Jackson and Walling trials, was at that place.

The Jailer went there and was informed that McKee was at Lawrenceburg. Bitzer telegraphed the authorities of the Indiana town and will leave there tonight on a boat.

Former Jailer John Bitzer of Newport, narrowly escaped serious injury Monday afternoon. He was enjoying an outing at a fishing camp and was on his way home in the launch "Rough Rider" in company with nine other members of the Licking Valley Rowing Association. Nearing California O. the launch was caught in the rollers and the rocking of the vessel threw Bitzer from his camp stool, his head striking the rapidly revolving flywheel of the engine.

His scalp was almost torn away and he was rendered unconscious. The boat was hurried to the Cincinnati Boat Club's wharf where the wounds of the injured man were attended to.

Anna Burke Bitzer filed suit for divorce in the Campbell Circuit Court yesterday afternoon from John Bitzer, former City Jailer of Newport. The defendant was formerly one of the most popular politicians in the city and was Jailer during the Jackson and Walling trials. The petition alleges drunkenness, cruelty and failure to provide.

About a year ago Mrs. Bitzer had the petition ready to file, but she did not proceed. There are three children, Irene, 16; Helen, 13 and Hilda, 8. Mrs. Bitzer asks for alimony and custody of the children.

Negotiations are pending for a settlement out of court of the divorce suit filed by the wife of ex-Jailer Bitzer of Newport. Mrs. Bitzer filed suit some months ago, alleging the defendant had acted toward her in a cruel manner. There are three children. As soon as the question as to the court costs is settled the suit will be withdrawn.
