Kentucky Post, Friday, 29 September 1944, page 1

AWARD-Presentation was to be made Friday to a Newport Army widow of a Silver Star Award given posthumously to her late husband, T Sgt James R Carney for gallantry in action against the Japs at Kwajalein Feb 2, which resulted in his death. The award was to be made to Mrs. Helen S Carney, of 215 Main avenue, by Major Harry B Perkins, in ceremonies at Ft Thomas where Sgt. Carney was stationed for many years prior to Pearl Harbor.

The citation commends Sgt. Carney for ignoring a hand grenade laying at his feet and shooting down a Jap soldier who was in the act if bayoneting an unarmed US Soldier." The grenade exploded an instant later killing Sgt. Carney.
