Funeral services for Mrs. Mahala Jane Hoop, 85, of 925 Putnam st. Newport, who died Thursday at her home, will be held Monday at 130 pm from the home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Hoop had been a lifelong resident of Newport. She was the widow of James B Hoop, Civil War veteran.

Funeral services for James B Hoop, 87, Civil War veteran, will be held Saturday at 2 pm from the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dora Dameron, 31 W 10th st. Newport. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.  Hoop died Wednesday at the home of his daughter following a lingering illness. It is believed his death was hastened by the death of his wife Mrs. Mahala Hoop, six months ago.

Hoop was born in Adams co. O. but had been a resident of Newport for many years. He was widely known. He was past commander of William Nelson Post No 1 GAR of Newport. Hoop and his wife had been married 64 years. He served during the entire Civil War participating in 27 different battles. He was the only surviving member of Cockerill's famous battery that held firm during the Battle of Stone River and which finally turned the tide of battle in favor of the Union forces. With Hoop's death only five members of the William Nelson Post remain.

Hop is survived by a son, Edgar T Hoop, Newport and daughter Mrs. Dameron with whom he lived, six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

William Nelson Post No 1 GAR of Newport and William Nelson Woman's Relief Corps No 2 will meet Saturday at 1:30 pm and go to the home of James B Hoop, 87, of 31 W 10th st. Newport to hold services. Honorary pallbearers from the Nelson Post will be Charles Solar, commander; Jacob Close, senior vice commander; Alfred Martinis, adjutant and quartermaster and August Seiter, chaplain all Civil War veterans.

Hoop, a Civil War veteran, died Wednesday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Dora Dameron, with whom he lived following a lingering illness. He had been a resident of Newport for many years and was widely known. He was a past commander of William Nelson Post and had held various other offices. He served throughout the Civil War taking part in 27 battles. He is survived by two children, Mrs. Dameron and Edgar T Hoop; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren and two brothers, Pete and Thomas Hoop, both of Peebles O.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 pm from the home of his daughter with Rev M B Klepinger, pastor of the United Brethren Church, officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
