James Turner Morehead

1797-1854

 

James Turner Morehead, a Senator from Kentucky; born near Shepherdsville, Bullitt Co 24 May 1797; attended pubic school at Russellville, and Transylvania University in Lexington; studied law; was admitted to the bar 1818 and commenced practice in Bowling Green; member of the State house of representatives 1827-1830; elected Lt. Governor of Kentucky in 1831 and served from 1832 until the death of Governor Breathitt on Feb 21, 1834, when he became Governor and served until 1836; again a member of the State house of representatives in 1837.

President of the State board of internal improvements 1838-1841; elected as a Whig to the Unites State Senate and served from March 4, 1841 to March 3, 1847; continued the practice of his profession in Covington until his death in that city on Dec 28, 1854; interment in the State lot of Frankfort Cemetery, Frankfort Ky.
