Captain John Calvin De Moss, the well known railroad man, died
yesterday afternoon at his residence, 623 Washington avenue, very suddenly.
The bursting of a blood vessel in the brain was the cause of death. Mr. De
Moss was taken ill last Tuesday at his office in Cincinnati and was sent home in
a cab.
His illness was only a slight indisposition and yesterday at 1:30 o'clock he was apparently enjoying perfect health. About 3 o'clock he went upstairs lay down on the bed and a few minutes later breathed his last.
Captain De Moss was one of the best known men in Campbell County, having been born there October 27, 1834 and residing in the county nearly all of his life. He was a son of Samuel De Moss, an old Kentucky pioneer, and his grandfather was a Revolutionary soldier. He spent several years in the mercantile business in Covington and Louisville, but for the past 12 years has served in the capacity of special claim agent for the B and O and C and O Railroads. In 1863 he was married to Miss Isophine Sullee and the result of that union was eight children, Mrs. John D Ellis, of Bellevue; Mrs. W L Glazier, Miss Isophine, Miss Calla and Miss Lucy King De Moss, John C, Sam and L M De Moss, the well known money order clerk at the Newport Post office. He represented Campbell County in the Kentucky Legislature in 1867-8 and was the author of the present Kentucky school system.
He was a devout Christian and has been an elder in the Christian Church of Newport for a long time. he was the prime mover in the Christian Church in California, and established the Campbell Street Christian Church in Louisville. For many years he was Master of Mayo Lodge of California F and A M and has been a member of the order for 44 years.
Captain De Moss enjoyed the confidence and respect of all who knew him and his sudden death will cause great sorrow among a wide circle of acquaintances. The funeral arrangements are not yet completed.
