New Sheriff Declares It Had Much to Do With His Success in Life

John P Nagel, who entered upon his duties as Sheriff of Campbell County today, has discovered that the figure 7 played an important part in his career.  Starting with his birth, which occurred March 7, 1870, he is now 35 years old or five times 7, and is probably the youngest Sheriff in the State.  He left school April 7 when 14 years old, or twice 7; was married May 7, 1890 and started in business May 7, 1897.

He was elected Sheriff on the Democratic ticket Nov 7 last year, defeating the strongest Republican in the county in the person of City Jailer Ben Ploeger.

BELLEVUE-Complaint was made today to Sheriff Nagel by residents in the vicinity of the Bellevue Ball Park, concerning the pigeon shoots which are held there every Sunday. No complaint is made as to the members of the gun club, who take part in the matches inside the grounds, but what they want stopped is the indiscriminating firing of every old kind of a weapon by the bush whackers who locate outside the grounds and shoot at pigeons that escape the aim of the inside marksmen. Shots are fired in all directions endangering the lives of those in the neighborhood.

FIRES-Sheriff Nagel stated today that as yet no report had been made to him of any incendiary fires in Campbell co. due to the work of night riders. Several nights ago the bar of Peter Daniels, a farmer residing  near Alexandria, was burned to the ground. The fire it is claimed, was the work of incendiaries. It was impossible to save anything in the barn, which contained five horses, six cows, a lot of farm implements and a big quantity of leaf tobacco.

A barn belonging to Samuel Bates, near Persimmon Grove, which contained a lot of tobacco, was also destroyed by fire, gave rise to the rumor that it was the work of night riders. Sheriff Nagel stated he would investigate the fires at once and would act promptly should any evidence be accrued showing the night riders were responsible for them.
