Dr. John and Caroline "Carrie" Elizabeth Bartholomew

John Bartholomew was born Oct 1861 in Michigan, and married Carrie Elizabeth Fetcher 5 October 1887 in Newport. She was the daughter of Charles F Fetcher nad Elizabeth Geisbauer. Charles Fetcher opened a pharmacy in Newport by 1860 and died in Dayton Ky. 13 Dec 1885.

It is said that Druggist John Bartholomew will be the President and E C Remme, formerly Cashier of the German National Bank, will be the cashier. The balance of the ground floor will be rented out for stores. Druggist Bartholomew will move one door north on York Street.

It is said the proposed building has almos been entirely rented out already. On the second and third floors lawyers offices will be installed. An elevator will be operated in the building and heat will be furnished by the latest heating apparatus. Judge Hodge is not the one interested in the erection of this building. It is a stock company in which the Equitable Company has invested quite a sum of money.

H Manheim, who conducted a restaurant at 410 York st. Newport, was not at his place of business Wednesday morning and his alleged creditors at once began to make investigations. To the amount of $10.50 John Bartholomew, the druggist, claims Manheim is indebted to him for cigars. It further developes that Manheim is in trouble with Uncle Sam.

He had been buying cigars from John Bartholomew, the druggist. Bartholomew had a bill against him for $10.50 and when he went to collect it, found Manheim ws gone. An empty box of Batchelor cigars was found in the showcase, and the stamp had never been scratched. Bartholomew called serveral witnesses to see the stamp was intact and then took the box away. He will turn it over to the revenue authorities so they can go after Manheim for violating the revenue law, which is rigorous on the subject.

Druggist John Bartholomew of Newport, is laid up at his home with a badly sprained ankle and instep, the result of a little encounter last evening with a well known minister of Newport, who is noted for his love for athletic sports and boxing, especially. Bartholmew is known as a crackerjack at the art of self-defense. Last evening he bantered the minister into putting on the gloves and then proceeded to show up as a novice.

The minister fooled him and before the first round had ended Bartholomew was down and out. In trying to evade his opponent his foot struck a chair and the member turned under him causing a painful sprain. Dr. Phythian attended Bartholomew and he will not be out for several days.

Attorney Heuver filed suit on behalf of the Incandescent Light and Stove Company against John Bartholomew to recover $457.40, alleged to be due on a contract. The plaintiffs claim that in November, 1904, defendant was made distributor for the sale of lighting machines in upper Michigan, and refused to pay the amount of claim which represents the cost of goods furnished the defendant.

John Bartholomew, a Newport druggist has discovered a new gun powder that is claimed to possess many advantages over any now in general use. In its finished state it is a white amorphouse crystal. Immersion on water does not impair its efficiency and it has a high penetrative force. It is not dangerous to handle and can be struck with great force without any danger of explosion.

Mr. Bartholomew had interested the officials of the War Department on his discovery.

The Board of Trustees of the Campbell co. Aid Society, a Newport corporation which has been under fire by Mayor Krieger at the request of a number of ministers of the city, met last night and declared the officers of the society are doing good work in aiding the poor of the city, and the alleged charges brought against the society are unfounded.

The trustees and officers are C B Gorman, President; Rev T P Campbell, General Superintendent; J Bartholomew, Treasurer; Charles Gain, Secretary. John Bartholomew stated today the society was doing good work and there was no reason why the citizens of Newport should not help along in the work. He said it was a benefit to the business men, as it prevented promiscuous public begging.

Not only that, my store is near the Newport gas office, and during the early part of this month, when people were paying their January bills, there was a constant stream of folks in my store all day complaining about the rank overcharges for January."
