John Hunkler

Kentucky Post, Saturday, 24 August 1895, page 7

Health Officer Phythian and Sanitary Officer McNamara last night started out on one of their nocturnal raids on milk wagons for the purpose of securing samples of the milk served by them. About 2:30 am they met John Hunkler, an Alexandria Pike dairyman, on Tenth Street, near Washington Avenue, and ordered him to halt. As McNamara started to secure a sample of milk, Hunkler whipped up his mule and started off at breakneck speed, with the two officers in hot pursuit.

Through streets and alleys they dashed arousing the sleeping residents, until finally they overhauled Hunkler at Washington Avenue and Front, where McNamara grabbed the bridle of the mule. A cut of the wipe, however, started the animal again, throwing McNamara to the ground. The chase continued until Hunkler was captured at the end of Bellevue.

He was brought to Newport and registered at Police Headquarters on the charge of resisting an officer. He was released on his promise to appear in the Police Court this morning, which he filed to do and an additional charge of contempt may be made. Meantime Dr. Phythian has revoked his permit to sell milk in this city.
