The father of Edward Steitz of Newport, died Saturday at the Soldiers Home in Dayton O. Word was sent here and the remains will be brought to Newport for burial.

The remains of John Steitz, a Civil War veteran, arrived in
Newport
yesterday from the Soldier's Home at Dayton Ohio and were removed to the home of
the family, on Robert street. His death was due to a fracture of the skull
sustained in a fall down a flight of stairs.

The funeral of the late John Steitz, a veteran of the Civil War, who died at the Dayton O. Soldiers Home, took place Tuesday afternoon at the family home on Robert Street, Newport. Rev Carl Schaeffer, pastor of St Paul German Protestant Lutheran Church, conducted the services. The body was taken to Evergreen Cemetery and buried.

John George Steitz was born 22 Feb 1839 in Germany, the son of Valentine and Henrietta. He enlisted 18 Apr 1861 at Camp Harrison Ohio, Co F, Ohio 10th Infantry He was discharged 5 June 1861 at Camp Dennison O. and re-enlisted 3 June 1861 at Camp Dennison. He was discharged 11 July 1863 at Perryville Ky. Wounds received at Battle of Perryville Ky. He was a Protestant and lived at 724 Roberts St in Newport.
