JOSEPH R DANIEL
Although not entirely unexpected, relatives and friends were shocked upon hearing of the passing of Joseph Roy Daniel, who was born July 5, 1895 and departed this life at Murray Foundation on Wednesday morning, March 23, 1949, aged 53 years, eight months and 18 days. He was the son of William and Dora Clemons Daniel and was of a family of seven children, one brother, Ernest Daniel of Newport, and six sisters, Mrs. Florine Hodge and Mrs. Warnie Gosney, both of Newport, Mrs. Alpha Weckbach of Covington, Mrs. Trevor Thornton of California and Mrs. Harley Baker of Grants Lick and Mrs. Emil Deatherage of Erlanger, all of whom survive except his mother.
He united with the Grants Lick Baptist Church in his youth where his membership still remains. He was united in marriage to Miss Florence Smith on March 5, 1915 to whom seven children were born, three sons, T/Sgt Leroy Daniel of Wheeler Field, Hawaii, Wm B Daniel of Cold Spring and Robert Lee Daniel of at home and four daughters, Mrs. Norman First of Newport, Mrs. Richard Brown of Cold Spring, Misses Rosella and Opal Daniel, both at home, 943 Columbia St, Newport. There are seven grandchildren.
Mr. Daniel was reared on a farm and shortly after their marriage made their home in Newport, where he obtained a position as clerk for Minges Hardware Store and he served efficiently and well for many years. He then purchased and operated a grocery store on Eleventh St and had a fine trade until he had to give it up on account of ill health. He was ever energetic and industrious and his last job was carrying the mail from Newport to Alexandria, although not able to carry on without the assistance of his family. He was upright and honest in all of his dealings with everyone and won the esteem and admiration of all who knew him. hew as kind and accommodating and was highly respected by friends unnumbered. he will be greatly missed by all, but especially by his devoted companion and children and grandchildren, his father, sisters and brother, all of whom helped all they could in alleviating his suffering during his long illness of leukemia.
His precious form lay instate from Friday until Sunday PM when relatives and friends by the score called through respect and sympathy. on Sunday afternoon funeral services were held at the Grants Lick Baptist Church, with Rev G J Steger officiating. he was assisted by Rev Sills and Rev Mitchell. His text was the words of Paul "I have fought a good fight. I have finished the course. I have kept the faith."
Miss Emma Lou Pierman served as pianist and Mrs. Robert Lane as soloist, rendering three appropriate selections, "In the Garden" "My Savior First of All" and "Near to the Heart of God."
