Joseph and Frances Mamie Selman


Joseph Selman was born in 1806 in Virginia, the son of Joseph and Elander (Freeman) He married Frances Mamie Wilson, in Newport 27 May 1858, who was born June 1826 in London England. Joseph was a Civil War Veteran who joined the 8th Kentucky Cavalry Co E, organized at Russellville Ky. on 13 Aug 1862 and served for one year mustering out 23 Sep 1863.

Duty began at Russellville, Bowling Green and Hopkinsville, Kentucky, District of West Kentucky, and at Clarksville, Tennessee, operating against guerrillas, until September 1863. Actions at Morganfield, Kentucky, August 3, 1862. Madisonville August 25. Morganfield September 1. Geiger's Lake September 3. Near Madisonville September 4. Ashbysburg September 25. Henderson County November 1. Greenville Road November 5. Garrettsburg November 6. Rural Hill, Tennessee, November 18. Near Nashville, Tennessee, January 28, 1863. Expedition from Bowling Green, Kentucky, to Tennessee State Line May 2–6. Operations against Morgan July 2–26. Buffington's Island, Ohio, July 19.

Joseph Selman died 5 Apr 1872 from the kick of a horse and was buried in the Newport Cemetery (now Evergreen) in Southgate. Frances Selman died 29 Nov 1906 in Covington and was buried in Evergreen.

NEWPORT-Joseph Selman, aged 64 years, had one of his legs broken day before yesterday by the kick of a vicious horse belonging to him. He had just purchased the animal.

NEWPORT-Joseph Selman, who suffered the amputation of a leg recently, died this morning. He had been a resident of Newport for about 40 years. He filled the office of City Marshal for several years.
