Jule Plummer Dead, Injuries Received in Wreck Caused Death of Deputy

"Me bad man, he good man.  He die; I live. Better I die"  Lone Star, Indian, lying on a cot at St. Elizabeth hospital, Covington, murmured these words when told that July Plummer, chief deputy sheriff of Campbell County, had died Friday midnight of injuries received Friday morning when the Newport auto patrol collided with a Ft. Mitchell car at Fourth street and Madison avenue.  Lone Star and Plummer were in the auto when the collision occurred.  The Indian is suffering from an injury to the collar bone.  Standing guard over his cot is County Patrolman William Manwaring.

Deputy Sheriff Plummer was en route to the Southern depot in Ludlow with Lone Star, who had been sentenced to two years in the penitentiary for shooting a man in Newport, when the patrol was wrecked.  Driver James Shethan escaped from the wreckage practically unhurt.

Plummer's head came into violent contact with one of the supports on the top of the patrol and his skull was fractured.   When carried into the plumbing shop of Commissioner Mason Hawk, the deputy sheriff displayed concern, regarding his prisoner, "Don't let him escape." whispered Plummer, who then lapsed into unconsciousness, in which condition he remained until his death.

Deputy Plummer was sheriff of Campbell county at the time of the Pearl Bryan murder and was in charge of the hanging of Scott Jackson and Alonzo Walling at the Newport jail for the murder of the Greencastle, Ind. girl in the yard of the Newport jail in 1897.

Mr. Plummer was a director of the Central Savings Bank and Trust company of Newport.  He was a member of the Elks and Pythian orders.
