Grants Lick Mail Service

Kentucky Post, Wednesday, 6 July 1904, page 5

The farmers along the Licking pike, between Newport and Grants Lick, about 15 miles away, are very much elated over the establishent of a star mail delivery route, and are receiving Carrier Sprague with opern arms. Heretofore the mail has been carried by the bus line and the farmers had to go to Grants Lick and the postal stations at intermediate points to get their mail. In rainy weather and in the harvest season this was particularly inconvenient.

Under the new arrangement the farmers are authorized by the Government to put up mail boxes at the entrances to their farms and the families thus have the mail delivered at their doors just as the city folks do.

This big improvement is very popular and many of the farmers will either buy mail boxes or construct them of wood.

The protest of the farmers along the Licking pike, between Grants Lick and Newport, against a change in the present Star Delivery Route is meeing with success as far as signers are concerned. The petition reads:

Grants Lick, Newport, and all way points.Hon Second Assistant Postmaster General, Washington DC. "Dear Sir: We the patrons on Star Route, from Grants Lick to Newport Ky. desire to protest against the change of the schedule for carrying the mails and give you the following reasons.

According to the present schedule the mailman leaves the Newport office at 1 pm and the heaviest mails and the most important ones arrive at the Newport office at 6:30 am, 8:30 am and 12 noon. So you can see where it makes close connection with the mailman. Should the mail leave Newport at 6 am as the new adverised schedule has it, then some of our mail will lay in the Newport office for 23 to 30 hours, which we do not believe is right and bitterly protest against. We are more than pleased with the new box delivery, the present carrier and conditions, so please allow things to remain as they are."

These petitions will be forwarded to Washington at once.
