NEWPORT

A daring holdup and daylight robbery occurred about 10 o'clock yesterday morning at the foot of Southgate street on the banks of the Licking River.  Michael Bauer, a veteran and pensioner of the Civil War, past 70 years of age, and for some time past an inmate of the New York Soldier's Home, was the victim.  The police think they have the men who committed the crime in jail.

Bauer had just arrived in Newport from the Home and was on his way to John's Hill to visit relatives.  He got as far as Third and Brighton streets, when he concluded to go down to the river bank and rest before continuing his journey.  it was while sitting here that he was set upon by two ruffians well nigh beaten into insensibility and robbed of $20.  When Bauer had partially recovered from the murderous attack he staggered to his feet, reached for his wallet and finding it gone, cried for help.

Some boys found Bauer and Chief Bennett was notified.  He detailed Lieutenant Schilling on the case.  Bauer was brought to the City Jail where Dr. Clarke dressed the wounds on the head made by some blunt instrument. He was bleeding profusely from wounds on the head and mouth.

Officer Fisher heard that John Mulvey and "Fatty" Phillips had been spending money quite freely and set out on the hunt for them. He found Mulvey on York street in a beastly state of intoxication and Phillips was later picked up by Officer Troy.  When searched Mulvey had $8 in his pockets and $1 hid under his tongue. Bauer identified Phillips as one of the men who assaulted him.

Phillips was not charged with highway robbery but is held on a charge of drunkenness. Bauer was not positive of his identification of Phillips and the charge will not be changed at once.
