Medical Officers at Newport Barracks
 

The first physicians in the Cincinnati, Newport, Covington area were medical officers assigned to the troops at Fort Washington.  Surgeons from Fort Washington treated Major Leitch when he died and James Taylor when he was sickened by bad water.  Dr. John Hale, a Revolutionary soldier was among the first settlers, along with Dr. John Sellman, Dr. John Cremmer and Dr. William Goforth.  Sellman arrived at Fort Washington with Wayne in 1793.  Dr. Allison was the first physician to die in Cincinnati in 1815.  Dr. Goforth followed him in 1816.  The first midwife in the area was Mrs. McKnight.

The following served at Newport Barracks. These names were found in records of the Surgeon General, The National Archives, Washington D.C., forts and hospitals, box 465. Others were found in letters.
