NEWPORT

The Election in Newport Ky. has gone again to the American party by a small majority-84 votes all told. Though rather on a small scale, it has fully demonstrated the dangerous use to which foreign influence may be used in a Government like ours. Holding the balance of power, they stood ready to cast their votes for that party who were ready to make the largest promises in behalf of foreigners, and denounce the loudest those principles that form the basis of republican institutions.

The city of Newport is nearly one-half inhabited by foreigners, who cast their votes almost to a man with the Wild Cat Party. A large proportion of the American party are men engaged in business on the river as captains, clerks, etc. and are now absent at different points, where they have been detained by the suspension of navigation.

The election can be considered as not test of the strength of the American Party in Newport and other than this it is of but little importance. The vote cast exceeded by about 100 that of any previous election and stories were afloat around the polls, that every species of trickery was resorted to for the purpose of gaining the election. The Wild Cat party elected their candidate for Mayor, Marshal, Treasurer, City Clerk, Assessor City Clerk, Engineer, and Wharfmaster and a majority of two in the City Council, by an average majority of about 80 votes, while the American Party elected all their candidates for School Trustee save one.

Hallam is a true blue Democrat, having been originally a Whig, next a Know Nothing, and when the dark lantern refused to give light, he entered the fold of the un-terrified. The old Whigs and K N's ought to be rewarded by the lion skinned Democracy.

The Democracy of Newport have been sorely troubled of late in view of their municipal election, which takes place today. Some of them desired the nomination of the present Mayor Fearons for the chief Magistracy, but he insisted upon being independent. Others proceeded to nominate X Sine. Meantime the citizens being dissatisfied with both, brought Col. Hawkins, an old Whig upon the track.
