Nicholas Yeager

My great, great grandfather, Nicholas Joerger/Yeager, was born on 10 Dec 1830 in Grossweier, Baden-Wurttemgerg, Germany, a small town in the Black Forest area in the southwest part of Germany to the east of the Upper Rhine River. He was the 8th and youngest child of Johann Alois Joerger, son of Franz Josef Joerger and Maria Barbara Wurtz, and Maria Anna Trapp, daughter of Johannes Trapp and Mary Theresa Volz, They were all staunch Catholics. In Nov 1851 Nicholas immigrated to America leaving behind his parents and some of his siblings in Germany. There were a group of Joergers on the ship so he must have been traveling with them and almost certainly related to them. He settled in the Wilder-Cold Springs-Johns Hill area of Campbell County, Kentucky. According to his obituary, Nicholas was one of the pioneer residents in Campbell County and one of the best known farmers in the area. Nicholas married at the age of 22 (1) Margaretha Sendelbach, daughter of Jacob Sendelbach and Mary Anna (Wolf) Sendelbach on the 9th of May 1853. She was born 1 Mar 1836 and died on 12 May 1859.

Nicholas bought property in the Magisterial District 4, Cold Springs on the Alexandria Pike south of Newport. Nicholas bought and sold several parcels of land in Campbell County. On 11 Aug 1858 he bought property located on Three Mile Creek, which runs into the Licking River, from Jacob Sendlebach, his father-in-law, containing 26 Acres.

He married Louisa Kneipp 20 August 1860 in Johns Hill, Campbell County at the St. Johns Catholic Church on Johns Hill Rd., where both of their families attended. She was born 5 March 1830, the daughter of John Kneipp and at this time, Louisa’s mother is unknown. Louisa came from either Bavaria or Germany. The ownership of this part of the country changed hands a lot during this time due to wars.

On the 20th day of Nov in the year 1869 he bought property located on Licking Three Mile Creek from J. M. Southgate and his wife Mary Emma Southgate, containing 63 Acres more or less that is next to the Catholic Church Burying Ground. The deed is in Book 8 Page 237 at the Newport courthouse.  On the 1st of Mar in the year 1874 he leased a parcel of land on Licking Three Mile Creek from W. W. Southgate containing 44 ½ Acres known as part of the Sinder place. This lease is in Book 10 Page 374 at the Newport courthouse.  On the 1st day of Sep in the year 1879 at the Newport courthouse is found a separation agreement between Nicholas and Louisa, however, on the 1880 Campbell County census, she is in the household again with Nicholas, so I am assuming that they did not stay separated long. It is in Book 24 Page 108 & 109 at the Newport courthouse.

On Page 122 and 123 of Court Order Book in Alexandria, Nicholas is appointed Supervisor of the building of a Road in District No. 93 from Nichols Mill to the Alexandria Pike and it stated that he should appoint hands to help him. In Court Order Book 9 at the Alexandria courthouse is found a notation stating that Nicholas tendered his resignation as Supervisor of the building of Road No. 93 and that he be paid $12.00 for his services. Frank Ziegler, a close neighbor and close friend was the newly appointed Supervisor. Nicholas and Frank were witnesses to the baptisms of some of each other’s children.

On the 19th day of Nov in the year of 1881 Nicholas and Louisa sold property located on Licking Three Mile Creek to son, Charles Aloysius Yeager, containing land on the SW half of property Nicholas bought on 11 August 1858. The deed is in Book 29 Page 249 at the Newport courthouse. On the 17th day of Dec in the year of 1881 H. H.(??) Southgate and wife Katie C. Southgate sold property located on Licking Three Mile Creek to Nicholas Yeager containing 44 ½ Acres more or less known as Lot 1. The deed is in Book 29 Page 292 at the Newport courthouse. On the 15th day of Aug in the year of 1891, Nicholas made his Last Will and Testament. It is located in Book 7 Page 179 & 180 in the Newport courthouse.

On the 8th day of Oct in the year of 1892 Nicholas and Louisa sell property on Licking Three Mile Creek containing 111 ¼ Acres to William J. Baker. This is the land that was conveyed to Nicholas from H. H. Southgate and wife on the 17th day of Dec 1881 and land conveyed to him from J. M. Southgate and wife by deed dated the 20th of Nov 1869. The deed is in Book 59 Page 391 and 392 in the Newport courthouse.  On the 16th day of Apr in the year 1894 Nicholas bought Lot No. 424 in the Trustees Addition to Newport on Hodge Street between Patterson and Brighton Sts from Mary Housner, widow, Fred Wiessler and Ernestine his wife. This deed is in Book 63 Page 280, 281 and 282 at the Newport courthouse.

On the 26th day of May in the year 1894 Nicholas and Louisa sell property to their daughter, Mary Louise (Yeager) Randz, being Lots 125 and 126 in the Buena Vista Addition of Newport on the West side of John St. between Tilbatts and Williamson Sts. This deed is in Book 63 Page 478 and 479 in the Newport courthouse. On the 13th day of Aug in the year 1894 Nicholas bought Lots 163, 164 and 165 in the Ft. Thomas Park 1st Subdivision on the Alexandria Pike about 4 miles from Newport from the Covington Trust Co. Trustees. This deed is in Book 64 Page 331 at the Newport courthouse.

On the 5th day of Oct in the year 1898 Nicholas bought land from John Schuster and Katie his wife located on the County Road leading from Alexandria to Claryville about ¼ mile from Alexandria near J. F. Wright’s land containing about 6 1/8 Acres. This is same land was conveyed to the Schusters from John Nuligan and wife. The deed is in Book 56 Page 480 at the Alexandria courthouse. On the 10th day of Feb in the year 1900 Nicholas sold land to William Bechtold containing 6 1/8 Acres and being the same land conveyed to Nicholas by John Schuster on 7 October 1898.

Nicholas and Louisa lived the rest of their lives in Campbell County until Nicholas’ death, raising their children. After Nicholas died, Louisa moved to Latonia in southern Covington, Kenton County, KY, where she is found on the 1910 census, and her address is noted on her death certificate as 3503 Carlisle Ave. in the home of her daughter, Anna and son-in-law William H. Holtman. Sometime during Nicholas and Louisa’s lifetime, the spelling of the last name was changed to Yeager, although I have seen it spelled various ways (Joerger/Jager/Yarger/ Jarger/Yoerger).

Nicholas died 21 May 1904 in the Speers Hospital in Dayton, KY  (Obituary) and Louise died 21 December 1917 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Holtman in Covington. They are both buried in St. Josephs Cemetery in Johns Hill, and I have a photo of the church, cemetery and their tombstone.  I also have a picture of them in later years and many documents including Nicholas’ birth certificate, which is in German, deeds, and his will.

While searching records at the Campbell County Courthouse in Newport, I found several deeds, leases and a will so far. I am in the process of transcribing these documents. Most of the old books are not indexed, so their names will not appear in the main index book, some of which is online. I am planning to spend many hours indexing one book at a time. (there are way over 200)

Since Peter is my direct line, I have a lot of information on his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. I plan on making many more research trips to that area since I live only about 1 ½ hours drive away in Dayton, Montgomery County, OH.  I intend to find out which of Nicholas and Louise’s daughters married William Holtman. I have been searching the 1910 census, but so far have not found them. But, I still have some of that census to look at. I would appreciate hearing from any others who may be researching these people.
