A scene of misery and want that she had not see duplicated in her years of service as a public health nurse was found on W Third st. Newport, Friday by Miss Olive Soden. Miss Soden found four families, a total of 18 people living in two rooms. Among the 18 and 12 children, ranging from 16 years to one month of age.

There was no food in the house and but scant clothing on the backs of the inhabitants. Accustomed as she is to the sigh of human misery, Miss Soden said she had never remembered seeing any condition more deplorable. After learning of the condition of the four families, two men contributed $3 for food. In addition to being without food and with scanty clothing, the glass is out of the windows. A few rags stuck in here and there keep out some of the wind and rain, but very little.

There are three men in the household and they are all out of work. Miss Soden learned, and have been unable to find employment. All of them have been in Newport about a week, coming there from Sweetwater Tenn. Anyone desiring to help the unfortunate people can do so by getting touch with Miss Soden at Room 5, Newport Courthouse.
