NATIVE OF THIS COUNTY-Fort Thomas KY 17 June 1900. Private Patrick M Bates, Company E, 2nd US Infantry, a native of Breckenridge county, who enlisted in the US Army at Louisville, KY. Jan 27, 1900, was accidentally drowned in the Ohio River near this point at 6:30 pm. the 11th inst. while bathing with tow of his comrades. He took cramps and called for help but sank before his companions could reach him. His body was recovered the evening of the 13th and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery with military honors early on the morning of the 14th.
Private Bates was one of the best soldiers in the service and was always ready to do his duty. He was a member of the Christian Endeavor and we think he was prepared to answer roll call on the other side of the tide. That he was a Christian was shown by the life he lived. He belonged to the Knights of the Golden Eagle and the Modern Woodmen of America.
