Rifle Range

Kentucky Post, Thursday, 18 February 1904, page 1

The soldiers at Ft Thomas will have an ideal rifle range in Campbell County, just three miles beyond Grants Lick and the deal for the purchase of the land was about consummated on Thursday morning by a notice from the Government.

The site selected is at the mouth of Phillips Creek, on the Licking Pike and is an 18 mile march for the soldiers from Ft Thomas by the Grants Lick Road. It is isolated from farms and house and there will be no danger of injury from target shooting by the soldiers.

When the range was first suggested some years ago, there were two places in view within three miles of each other.Mrs. Taliaferro owned the tract of land that was at first selected. Many complaints by farmers were made that the shooting was dangerous in that vicinity and the range was later abandoned. The site now selected is owned by the Shaler estate, of which Dr. Shaler Berry is administrator. There are 500 acres of land owned by the estate, where the Government will place the range.

Dr. Berry received a letter from the authorities at Washington Thursday and Attorney Albert Berry Jr. went to the proposed range Thursday to close the deal for a small tract of land that is wanted.  The site selected is in a good location to be reached by rail, as the K C Road runs on the other side of the Licking and a crossing can be made in flatboats.
