KILLED-The police drag net Monday was spread for James S Scott, alias "Skeets" Scott, charged by police with having fired the shot that ended the life of Robert Cowie, 39, of 524 E Front st. Newport, bartender at Third and Monmouth streets, Newport, shortly before midnight Saturday. The shooting, according to witnesses, was without provocation.
According to police, Scott, who formerly lived in Maysville, came into the cafe owned by John Eviston, at Third and Monmouth streets, a half hour before and demanded a drink of whiskey. Informed there was no moonshine to be had he became abusive and was ordered from the place. It is charged he obtained a pistol and returned to the scene. The alleged gun user, with a man registering as John Mariwe, alias McCarthy, returned to the scene and started another argument. The midnight hour had arrived and Cowie started for home.
Scoot whipped out a pistol and fired a number of shots, one of which struck Cowie and he fell mortally wounded. Scott is alleged to have beaten him with the butt of the gun. The shooting attracted the attention of James Fuller, Dave Murphy, detectives and several Newport police officers.
The victim formerly was employed as a machinist and shoemaker and is survived by a widow and several small children. The funeral of Cowie will be held Wednesday afternoon with services at the late home. The body will be interred in Evergreen Cemetery.

DENIED-The hunt for Scott ended Monday when he walked into police headquarters and surrendered. He denied doing the shooting. Scott says he was ordered out of the saloon and upon going out was hit on the head. After that he remembered little. He told police if he had a gun someone gave it to him because he did not have one when in the saloon. A witness, George Jackson, a witness to the shooting, swore to a charge that Marlow encouraged Scott to shoot Cowie.

ECHO-Echo of the murder of Robert Cowie, several days ago, was heard Friday in the Newport Police Court when J H Marlowe, one of the men charged with murder in connection with the death, was arraigned in the Court. Marlowe offered no defense. Marlowe with James Scott were held to the grand jury by Judge W C Buten in connection with the shooting.
