In pursuance of an order of Hon. R D Hayman, Mayor of the City of Newport, made at the request of a number of the most prominent citizens of the city, a mass meeting was held at half-past seven on Saturday evening at the Court house, for the purpose of considering and passing appropriate resolutions expressive of the personal character of the late General Robert E Lee and their sense of loss.

"Uncle Rob" Hayman, an ex-mayor of Newport, passed quietly away yesterday at St Elizabeth Hospital in Covington. His career has become a real careful one, having been Mayor in the forties. He was also a member of the Legislature and the Board of Council and was a Magistrate for several years. His funeral was this afternoon from the ??? Street M E Church. The interment was in Evergreen.
