Gaming and other vice conditions in Newport were at the lowest possible ebb over Monday and Monday night, Police Chief George Gugel advised City Manager Oscar Hesch Tuesday. The city manager and Mayor Robert L Sidell as well as commissioners pledged themselves against any return of former unfavorable conditions in the city.

To meet the pay hike and other provisions, Mayor Robert L Sidell stated a 10-to-15 cent tax rate increase would be mandatory to raise the $63,000 in new revenue to meet the firemen's pay boost. A pay boost and a shorter work week can be given firemen.
