NEWPORT SAFETY FUND BANK

It should be generally known that the notes of this institution, of a less denomination than $5, have been issued without the intervention of the Kentucky Auditor of State, and are not secured by any corresponding deposit of bonds, etc. with him. We call attention to this fact, as quite a flourish was recently made over the deposit of bonds and mortgages in the Auditor's office for the security of the note holder, and because we are informed, extraordinary exertions are now making to get the notes into circulation.

Whether the President and Directors have any authority to issue notes of a denomination less than five dollars, is a question we will not attempt to decide. It is doubtful matter which those interested will look into especially as the first notes issued came into circulation in a way unprecedented and not a little suspicious. Out object is merely to put the community on its guard.

John S Dye, Esq. Sir: The Newport Safety Fund Bank of Kentucky, at Newport, is authorized to issue notes of one, two, and three dollars and to be signed by the President or Cashier: and without being countersigned by the auditor, the notes are receivable in payment of revenues and county levis. Your, Thomas S Page, Auditor, Frankfort Ky.

The Bank has met with promptness every call and the demands on her, for the last few days, have been very light. The various rumors against her are unfounded. We think it a well conducted and safe institution.

Dyes Bank Mirror, Tuesday, 1 February 1853, page 4

We beg to annex the condition of this institution. A continual war has been made upon it by some persons in this city, endeavoring to create a continual run upon it. If some of these parties that have so constantly assailed her, had a similar run upon them, we doubt whether they have sustained themselves in so able a manner. We hope this exhibit will place her before the public in the future. Her President, James M McArthur, is a gentleman of sterling integrity: and the Cashier, H Buchanan, Esq. has likewise been known well to this community, for many years as the efficient teller of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Company and of high standing and integrity.

The Newport Safety Fund Bank of Kentucky has failed. Its large notes are secured by stocks and mortgages, but there is no security for notes of a less denomination that $5.
