Captain Alexander Wetherill No 5

Campbell County, Kentucky

Cincinnati Enquirer, Sunday, 18 September 1898, page 28

For days the question where to camp the Sixth Regiment has been bothering Lieutenant Lee, who as Quartermaster, must provide for it a suitable camping place. The question was settled yesterday and it was decided to encamp the regiment at Southgate, which is about one mile from Newport on the Alexandria Pike. The camp site is directly on the car line and it will be easy for the public to reach it.

It is to be known a Camp Wetherill, this being the name selected yesterday in honor of the gallant officer who fell at the battle of Santiago and who was liked by every man and officer in the regiment. Captain Wetherill died under circumstances distressing. His name is revered by the enlisted men of the regiment.  The camp is just at the outskirts of the Shaler woods, with plenty of blue grass. The ground has just sufficient pitch to insure a healthy, dry camp at all times.

It has historic interest. On the east side of the camp site are the rifle pits of old Ft. Shaler, which commands the Alexandria pike. On the other side is Ft Beech, commanding the Licking Pike. These fortifications were built during the Civil War and were erected to protect the approaches to Cincinnati. The troops were under the command of General Lew Wallace and Clay Smith, the latter having once represented the Sixth Kentucky District in Congress. Too much credit cannot be given to Congressman A S Berry, who offered the site to the Government as a campground free of cost.

The public spirited citizens of Newport are determined that when the gallant Sixth Infantry comes marching home they shall received a genuine Kentucky greeting. Chief of Police Bennett, Sheriff Fred Miller and President of Alderman George McGinniss went to Ft Thomas to lay the case before Colonel Egbert. He said that the Sixth must by all means march through Newport, the city which had never failed to hone its home regiment and had presented to it the magnificent battle flag which had led them on to victory at Santiago.

He said the flay, which had always been zealously guarded by the regiment, must be floated to the breeze in Newport's streets to show to the patriotic citizens that the trust had not been violated. The Newport and Covington members of the Second Kentucky Volunteer Infantry will turn out as escort. There are about 100 members of that regiment here now.

Newport will also furnish music. A committee of six to secure the finances; Judge Dumont, Messrs. Boltz, Silva, Schroll, Weidner, Lock and Weckman. A committee on Decorations; Jule Plummer, Fred Miller, Sam Harton and Elmer Smith. Colonel Berry donated the use of a large field piece and Chief Link of the Fire Department was selected as Chief of Auxilery. Congressman A S Berry was selected as chairman of the Newport committees who will meet the Sixth at Blanchester Ohio and acquaint them with the details for their reception.

The following letter was received yesterday: "Dear Senator Foraker, Referring to your statement that the citizens of Cincinnati and the vicinity of Ft Thomas are erecting at that post, a tablet to commemorate the heroism and valor displayed by the Sixth United States Infantry at El Caney, and also the services of General Egbert formerly of the Sixth, recently killed in battle near Manila and your request that two pieces of artillery captured at Santiago be sent there for use in connection with that tablet.

I take pleasure in informing you that the commanding officer of the Watervliet Arsenal has this day been instructed to issue to Ft Thomas two large Spanish guns of bronze, manufactured at Barcelona (Spain) in 1768 and 1769. These cannon were among those captured at Santiago. Respectfully, R A Alger, Secretary of War
