FT. THOMAS TROOPS ARE DESTINED IN CASE OF WAR

Advices from Charleston S C, are to the effect that preparations are being made to receive a regiment of soldiers at Fort Sullivan, which protects the bay and that the troops expected are those from Ft. Thomas. Colonel Cochran and other officials at the Kentucky post on the Ohio highlands profess to know nothing of the matter, having received no orders.

It is well known, however, that the entire garrison could be placed on cars within 24 hours after receiving telegraphic orders. The Ft Thomas troops are really the nearest to the Southern seaboard, next to those at Atlanta, Ga. through which point the Sixth would likely pass en route to Ft. Sullivan. In Charleston it is almost definitely accepted that the Ft. Thomas troops are to be sent there.

Final Scenes When the Troops Turned Their Backs on the Fort

The departure of the troops from Ft. Thomas was a sight that will long be remembered. At 2:05 the first call was sounded by Drummer Henderson, who stood on the south campus near Colonel Cochran's residence. Along the barracks was the gleam of the white haversacks against the blue of the soldier coat. At 2:10 the regimental band and field musicians appeared toward the north led by Drum-Major Leroy Chance, who stood six feet five and as straight as the post tower.
