JAMES ARNOLD LEFT BOURBON CO TO FIND HIS FORTUNE IN COVINGTON

Antoher early Covington pioneer buried at Linden Grove Cemetery is James Grimsley Arnold.  Arnold was born six miles east of Paris in Bourbon County on Jan 10, 1782.  While he still was a young child, the family moved to Boone County where Arnold grew up in the North Bend area.  As a young adult Arnold moved to the old community of Washington in Mason Co.  There with his brother, Willis Arnold, he established a school.

While living in Mason Co, James Arnold met and married Margaret Daulton Strain, the sister of former Maysville mayor Thomas Daulton.  Arnold was 24.  In 1817 the Arnolds moved to Covington.  James ran a hotel and worked as a merchant and post master.  He made his fortune, however, in tobacco and later in real estate.  He owned properties at Sixth and Main, Second and Kennedy and Third and Scott, among others.

He went into politics and became the city clerk and later, president of the city council and mayor.  He served for a time with William Wright Southgate and served a term as county sheriff.  Arnold and his wife had two sons and four daughters. It may well have been because of those daughter that in 1845, Arnold was among a group that started the Covington Female Academy.  The academy was to teach young ladies such things as science, history, music astronomy and composition.

Arnold died Nov 16, 1876 after an extended illness.  His estate was valued at $400,000.  His will included $5000 to what would become the University of Kentucky and several thousand dollars to Bethany College in Virginia.  The rest was to go to his living children; Thomas N, Mrs. Joseph B Boyd, Virginia B Willis and Mary D Foote and to the grandchildren.  The will was contested, however, and dragged out in court until February 1885, 19 years after his death.
