PRISONER-Pvt. William M Champ, a member of the United Nations invasion forces in North Africa, is a prisoner of war, according to word received here by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Abner M Champ, 136 Overlook drive, S Newport. The parents disclosed Tuesday the receipt of a letter from their son, which was dated May 1. In the letter Pvt. Champ told of being captured by the Italians in Tunis and that he was expecting to be transferred into the interior of Germany as a prisoner of war.

Pvt. Champ is a graduate of Newport High School and is 25 years old. Prior to being inducted into the Army in December, 1941, he was employed as a civilian at the Ft Thomas Military Hospital. A younger brother Frank, 21, is in the Navy.

FREED-PFC William M Champ, son of Abner Champ, of 136 Overlook drive, South Newport, was recently freed from a German prison camp, his father learned. He was captured by the Germans in early 1943 in the battle of North Africa.
