NEWPORT-Private William A Rowland, Company F, 3d Battalion, 15th US Infantry, was charged with desertion, plead guilty and was sentenced to be dishonorably discharged from the United States service, to forfeit all pay and allowance, have his head shaved and be drummed through the parade ground of Newport Barracks, Ky. and to be confined to hard labor in such penitentiary as the reviewing officers might direct for the term of four years.

The sentence was confirmed by the reviewing officer, but mitigated to forfeiture of pay and allowances till the 23d of November and ten dollars per month of his pay for eighteen months, during which time he is to be confined at hard labor in charge of a guard at the station of his company.
